Doyle, et al. v. San Diego Transit System

VERDICT

Trial
02/06/25 – 02/19/25

Summary

In this trial, nine plaintiffs suffered injuries during a child's birthday party when a platform inside a warehouse used as a parkour gym collapsed. This warehouse was originally owned by San Diego County's Metropolitan Transit System but is leased out to tenants to host parties. The other tenants settled with the plaintiffs, leaving San Diego County as the sole defendant.

Representatives for the plaintiffs claim that San Diego County should have inspected the space they rented before it was opened for public use. SDC employees testified that they were unaware of the platform their tenants erected, but footage shows workers from the county frequenting the premises.

Defendant San Diego County assigns responsibility to the companies renting the space from them: Vault PK and San Diego Sports Entertainment Center. As San Diego County originally rented the space to SDSEC, who then rented it to Vault PK, representatives for SDC claim that they did not know what the platforms inside would be used for.

Outcome

Verdict for plaintiffs.
Total damages: 1.25 million.

Apportionment of fault:
San Diego Metropolitan Transit System: 15%
San Diego Sports Entertainment Center & Vault PK: 85%
