In this Engle progeny tobacco suit, plaintiffs Thomas and Bettye Ryan claim that defendant tobacco manufacturers concealed the dangers of smoking cigarettes, fueling nicotine addiction and leading to smoking-related health problems.


Verdict for the plaintiff.

The $21.5 million compensatory award includes:

$16.5 million to Thomas Ryan.
$5 million to Bettye Ryan.

Liability was apportioned as follows:
R.J. Reynolds: 65%
Thomas Ryan: 35%
